The scenes and objects taken under different illumination or exposure time will show different effects in details. The reason is that under a simplex illumination, only part details of the photographed scenes or objects can be showed out properly due to different light volumes on the objects. Therefore it becomes a hot topic in the area of image process to do the research on image fusion to get a surrealist, ideal or artistic effect. This technique can also be used in other areas, such as media editing and video monitoring. For example, by fusing the daytime image and the nighttime videos, a surrealist is generated to enhance the information volume of the low quality nighttime video. This paper firstly introduces the background of the technique of surrealist image fusion, and summarizes its development history and research status. Then it analyzes and implements a gradient-domain based technique of fusing images taken under different illumination. In addition, this technique can be used to fuse images taken under different exposure time. Our approach is based on a gradient domain technique that preserves important local perceptual cues while avoiding traditional problems such as aliasing, ghosting and haloing. On this basis, this image fusion technology is further applied to video, to enhance the context of video by fusing the video frame and background image. Experiment results are given both in generating surrealistic image and surrealistic video.
