Several problems such as needs changing and document maintenance emerge as new drags on the further progress of software industry. In order to settle these problems, the Object Management Government (OMG) presents a new technology called Model Driven Architecture (MDA), which shows the idea to build systems through models. MDA is an attempt of the OMG to implement the execution ability of models with the purpose to use modeling languages as programming languages. The research of MDA is currently based on MOF, UML, CWM and XMI. The platform-independent application constructed on MDA and its correlative standards can run on multiple open or specific platforms, including CORBA, J2EE, .NET, Web services or any other platform based on the Web.In this paper, we first review the theory, concept and correlative standards of MDA. Then we discuss the main techniques of MDA, including extending UML, translation from UML model to XML using XMI, translation technology from PIM to PSM, the implementation and development of application based on J2EE of MDA. We propose the method to extending the architecture of MDA. Next, we introduce the implementation tools of MDA and discuss some issues encountered in the development of an illustration system. At last, we conclude this paper with discussion on future work.
