Based on the investigation into the mechanism of spontaneous Brillouin scattering, the wide-range temperature dependence of Brillouin shift in an optical fiber has been studied theoretically, for the first time to our knowledge, and the obtained results are in good agreement with the reported experiment data. The stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in fiber and its influence on sensing system are analyzed, and the SBS threshold of G.652 and G.655 optical fibers has been measured. The Brillouin spectra of optical fibers, G.652, G.655, carbon-coated fiber and high-temperature resistant fiber, at room temperature have been measured, and the experimental study of temperature characteristic of Brillouin spectrum in G.652 fiber has been conducted. A temperature sensing system with high spatial resolution and accuracy has been proposed. The virtual instrument development platform LabVIEW is used to call the driver of the data acquisition card, NI 5112, to perform the acquisition, saving, processing and display of Brillouin spectrum, which improves the frequency resolution of spectrum measurement and real-time performance of the system greatly.
