With the popularization of the high performance of mobile equipments and the Internet, the applications of the GIS have already broken out the traditional realm and developed in the embedment and the network areas rapidly. The development of the GIS in specific system and environment has become the research focus. And the GPS vehicle navigation system is one of the typical applications of GIS system based on the embedded environment. The techniques of the GPS vehicle navigation which combined with GIS system and embedded system crossed over several realms. To sum up, a navigation system should solve some major problems as follow:1. The compression of the eMap data. Because of hugeness of eMap data, if data is not compressed, the more storage is needed. But the storage of embedded system is very limited and precious. So it is important to compress the eMap data.2. The Resolution of the vector eMap data. There are many kinds of standard of eMap data format. Most of them are vector data. Before the development of the system, one of the problems we should solve is to parse the structure of the certain eMap data file and recover the basic vector elements such as point, line and side from the files correctly.3. The real time display of the eMap. The elements of eMap are very excessive. The time to display an intact eMap is very long. Whether the displaying time of the eMap is controlled in a range that the users can accept or not is an important factor to judge the practicability of a system.4. The intellective navigation algorithm. It is a basic function of a navigation system to find several paths which can satisfy several requirements between the two points that are selected at random in the eMap. Considering the hardware environment and the users' requirements, it is important task for a system to choose a reasonable and rapid intellective navigation algorithm. This Article which takes these four major techniques as the main line analyzes the present research of the major techniques, then discusses the possibility of them to be used in the vehicle navigation system and puts forward some new schemes to avoid the present technique's shortcomings that used in embedded environment at last.
