There has been a great deal of interest in Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology in recent years. After gaining regulatory approval in the US, the technology has moved from being an arcane topic in research department of universities and some start-up companies to mainstream telecommunications. The application of UWB signals in communication systems offer some unique advantages such as larger channel capacity, deeper material penetration, higher processing gain and multipath resolution when compared with narrowband systems. UWB is a very promising technology, which is expected to play a revolutionary role in the future of wireless communications systems. However, a lot of research is still required in order to make it commercially viable for different applications. We took our own measurements of UWB indoor propagation channel, aiming at collecting"live"data to be used in obtaining accurate characterization of the multipath, which is extremely important for developing transceivers to achieve efficient UWB communication. Totally speaking, the thesis includes the following parts:Firstly, this paper provides an overview of UWB technology by covering its history and background, the basic concepts behind UWB communications as well as UWB's advantages and challenges. It also presents a detailed discussion of pulse shapes used for transmission and two main kinds of modulation techniques, which are pulse-position modulation (PPM) and pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM).Secondly, the paper introduces the basic theory of wireless channel as well as the distinctive property of indoor multipath. A modified Saleh-Valenzuela model, adopted by the IEEE 802.15.3a study group, has been studied in detail, which includes both large and small scale effects, as well as the representative model parameters suggested by the group. Finally the channel impulse responses (CIR) were given out by developing simulations based on the four different kinds of channel conditions defined in the model.Thirdly, some details such as hardware configuration, parameters selection...
