The rapid development of computing technology, especially the network technology, changes people's way of working, living and thinking deeply. With the increase of computing capacity and the popularity of broadband networks, people prefer the real-time video and/or audio information to the traditional surfing over the internet, file downloading or chatting. So the"play while downloading"streaming technology comes out and develops fast. For the huge size of media files and the real time requirement of clients, it's a challenging subject that distributing media contents over Internet with high quality and low cost. Nowadays, the brightest solution is the P2P application layer multicast overlay network based on client solution for its low cost and good scalability. In the article, the author first put forward the application layer multicast model and analyses the existing P2P streaming application structures. Than it's introduced focused on the single-tree based, the multi-tree based and the reticulation based network models. Compared with the existing models, there are some limitations such as fast receiving and the reliability needed to mend. According to the analysis of the existing solutions on streaming media, the article brings forward a new P2P streaming media network model—NIMPAS (Network Information Matched and Proxy Assisted P2P Streaming Solution). NIMPAS, with the existing predominance of supporting large-scale clients and low cost, uses the proxy assisted appended to ensure the streaming reliability and network information matching to shorten the receiving time and gives the clients good experience.
