The goal of the MPEG-4 Audio standard is to provide a universal toolbox for transparent and efficient coding of natural audio signals for many different application areas. As the core of MPEG-4 audio standard, MPEG-4 AAC(advanced audio coding) uses the techniques of Time/Frequency coding, sub-band division and etc, including complicated computations of trigonometric and nonlinear functions. In embedded applications, how to implement the real time codec with smaller memory and lower processing consuming is the key issue of this paper. Based on the hardware of DSP chip TMS320C6416, this paper developed the fixed point operations and optimization work of the MPEG-4 AAC codec, completed the fixed point implementation of the modules of LC profile(Low Complexity) and LD profile(Low Delay), Implemented codec supports various sampling rates and options of one or two channels, the sizes of program memory and data memory and instruction consuming were limited in prescriptive volumes. The results show that the developed encoder with fixed point operations satisfies the requirement of compression ratio and has better objective and subjective reconstruction quality.
