IP network is developing towards larger band width and higher QoS rapidly, so that the network planning has taken a more and more important role in modern times.Aiming at the requirement of network planning, this thesis has compared with several methods and technique of network traffic and flow direction monitoring and established a IP network monitoring system based on NetFlow. This system is focused on IP backbone network with collecting, analyzing and forecasting the network traffic and flow direction. The setup of system is very convenient and the analyzing is very dissectional, comprehensive and flexible.Each network is imported into database as a monitoring object, after that, the network traffic with NetFlow format would be divided into normal flow and abnormal flow and analyzed respectively. Through studying the source and destination IP address, AS number, port number, protocol type, interface, bytes packets etc. in NetFlow records, the traffic and flow direction of nodes or links in different conditions and requirements can be work out. With these data, the traffic and flow direction can be forecasted in network planning period. The network object in the database would be updated and the network would be optimized according to the forecast data. Finally, the result would be sent to users with topological diagram and table formats.
