This paper describes the historical background, developing status of the world and development trend of 2μm laser. 2μm laser has received considerable attention from many researchers for its unique characters, which is the necessary pump source of 35 micron OPO. It has presented more and more comprehensive prospects for a wide range of applications including eye-safe ranger-finder, photoelectric counterwork, medicine diagnosis, atmospheric sensing by differential absorption lidar , etc.Both energy level schemes of Tm3+ and Ho3+ in GdVO4 crystal were confirmed after the absorption spectra of .Tm:GdVO4 and Ho:GdVO4. The Judd-Ofelt model was applied to obtain the three phenomenological intensity parameters. For Tm3+,Ω2=5.33×10-20cm2 ,Ω4=4.26×10-20cm2,Ω6=0.16×10-20cm2 .For Ho3+,Ω2=0.273×10-20cm2,Ω4=0.821×10-20cm2,Ω6=0.434×10-20cm2.The spontaneous emission transition rate, radiative lifetime, fluorescence branching ratio and integrated emission cross section of Tm3+and Ho3+ in GdVO4 crystal were then determined. Through carefully analyzing the results, 3F4â†'3H6 was estimated as being the most effective transition which could cause laser emission of Tm.This paper gives the study about CW solid-state-laser single-end-pumped Tm:GdVO4 by LD at low temperature. By compare the results of plate cavity and plate-concave cavity, we got that the plate-concave cavity is much better for the experiment. At last, we got the output power at 1.901μm under the condition of single-end-pumped is1.13W, slop efficiency is 25.7%.
