In the last few years there is an explosive growth in demand for bandwidth, leading to the rise of optical internetwork. The VSR (Very Short Reach) interface is a low-cost and high-performance solution suitable for the ultra high-speed data transmission between short distances. The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) has defined a set of implementation agreements for OC-192 and OC-768 applications. Among them, VSR4-01, VSR4-03 and VSR5-01 converter ICs are our research interest.Based on the analysis of the current SDH synchronization circuits, a novel parallel binary search word alignment circuit is proposed specifically for SDH systems. It has much higher performance than the current SDH synchronization circuits. Through the analysis of the error detect mechanism of the VSR4-01 agreement, a new bit error correction method is given and the associated circuit has been realized. The digital part of a VSR4-03 converter IC has been realized based on an FPGA, and an experiment system has been established for the 10Gb/s point–to-point transmission. The test results show that the bit error rate is lower than 10-13.Meanwhile, the digital part of a VSR5-01 converter IC has been realized. The simulation and test results show that the circuits can meet the high speed data transfer requirements for OC-768.
