With the development of robotic technology, the application of robots has been extended more and more widely. The robots are required to be more intelligent, and not only complete some large–scale assemblage tasks in works, but also achieve complex missions in indoor and outdoor environment. Therefore, the sensory ability appears more important. Now the research of robots'sensors is mainly on touching, looking and listening, and the robots which can see, hear and speak appeared. But there are few researches on robot's olfaction, although the olfaction robots can complete lots of serious dangerous work instead of human, for example, finding the leakage of drugs, landmines, leakages of pipe and so on..After introducing the development of robots olfaction and smelling robots, the article concludes the principle and frame of smelling robots based on the analysis of the principle of biology and searching odor source algorithms, then expatiates on the signal processing algorithms, pattern recognition technology, and presents many searching algorithms.According to the theories above, the article design the hardware of the smelling robot based on the gas sensors array and MCU, and the flow charts of the MCU drivers are given. Finally, the article uses the testing device get the quantitative signals of mixed gas. With which the article train the artificial network and test the net by the theory of artificial network. And the result shows that the net can fulfill our requirements. Then the net is moved into MCU with the weights and thresholds got from the trained net. Then the article chooses the mechanical system, builds up the smelling robotic system, and programs the software of the system based on the half-random searching algorithm.
