Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is considered to be one of themain obstacles for long-haul optical fiber communication systems withthe speed beyond 10Gbit/s. Therefore, it has been a hot topic in recentyears.Because of the statistic characteristic, PMD in fiber link alwaysrandomly changes which demands adaptive PMD compensation and thusmakes it difficult for PMD compensation.Adaptive PMD compensatorconsists of PMD monitor,PMD compensation unit, logic control unit.Therole that logic control unit plays in adaptive PMD compensation is mostimportant which is like the role that brain of man plays. The difficulty isto find a compatible control algorithm. No compatible control algorithmis one important reason that pratical achievement in PMD compensatorhas been unable to make. A compatible control algorithm should at leastsatisfy the following basic characteristics: (1)rapid converging to theglobal optimum and avoiding to be trapped into local sub-optima;(2)robust to noise.In this paper, we proposed and realised a controlalgorithm for adaptive PMD compensation which showed robustness tonoise and a powerful ability of fast searching global optimum withoutsinking in local sub-optima, and also demonstrated itself a goodcharacteristic for tracking in PMD compensation.
