The wireless environment is unpredictable, while the traditional layers model only allows adjacent layers to communicate in a fixed way. Obviously this methodology can't adapt to the environment in time, so the system is usually designed to work in the most terrible environment, which would waste much spectral resource. So a conflict between the layers model design and the unpredictable wireless environment emerges. On this background, the concept of cross-layer design was developed, which means a specific layer could use the information from other layers. This solution makes the design more flexible and was proved useful. This paper presents a cross-layer system based on adaptive modulation and coding. On physical layer, the system adopts adaptive modulation and coding to transfer data. Because it involves physical layer data-link layer and transfer layer, the cooperation between layers is necessary. The system processes the parameters from physical layer and hands the results to higher layer, so that hide the details of physical layer. The simulation was realized in two steps. On high layers, the paper studied ARQ, finite queue and TCP, which interact with adaptive modulation and coding. And a cross-layer design...
