As the growth of 2.5 Generation of mobile data network, such as GPRS, EDGE and CDMA IX, and the third Generation of mobile system deployment area, like UMTS WCDMA and CDMA2000 EV-DO, multimedia streaming is increasingly becoming one of the popular data services that operators will seek to provide. However, the multimedia streaming solutions that have successfully been deployed commercially on the Internet in the past are all based on proprietary technologies. Only after the existing streaming applications are considerably rethought, it will work well over wireless network. Starting early from Release 4 and 5 specifications, the Third Generation Partner Project (3GPP) standardization body has standardized streaming services. Furthermore, 3GPP Release 6 has envisioned an advanced streaming technology, rate adaptation, which will overcome the technical challenges of unstable transmission rate posed by wireless and Best Effort networks. The standardized solution for advanced multimedia streaming will give the end user the better service experience, and ultimately will drive operators and users' adoption. This paper will make the further discussion and study on the rate adaptation solution standardized in 3GPP Release 6.
