OFDM is short for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, an FDM modulation technique for transmitting large amounts of digital data over a radio wave. OFDM works by splitting the radio signal into multiple orthogonal smaller sub-signals that are then transmitted simultaneously at different frequencies to the receiver. It can effectively combats the multiply path effect, eliminates the internal symbol interferences, defeats the frequency selectively loss, reduces the amount of crosstalk in signal transmission and it has high channel efficiency. DAB, DVB, 802.11WLAN, 802.16 and WiMAX technologies use OFDM.Synchronization is a key problem in all telecommunication systems and it plays a more important role in OFDM system because OFDM is a multi-carrier system. [4] presents a ML (Maximum-likelihood) synchronization algorithm of time offset and frequency offset by using cyclic prefix while [2] introduces a ML synchronization algorithm of time offset by using both cyclic prefix and pilots. This paper combines these two papers' algorithms into a new algorithm and proposes a ML Synchronization algorithm of Time and Frequency Offset using both Cyclic Prefix and Pilot Symbols in OFDM Systems.First of all, I combined channel model in [4] [2] into a new channel model. Secondly, I deduced the new synchronization algorithm based on statistics and maximum likelihood theory. It is easy to prove that the new synchronization algorithm is a more generic than [4, 2] and [4, 2] can be regarded as the special instances of the new algorithm. The new algorithm performance is much higher than [4] because it employs pilots...
