With the rapid development of information technology, more and more enterprises want to get more useful information to help them make decisions. In order to make more use of the data in their routine work, they use data warehouse technique to analyze data and to turn these data into information. There are many differences between developing a data warehouse and developing an OLTP system, and there are many new features in developing data warehouse. How to use these new features properly to develop a high-performance data warehouse is a significant research issue both theoretically and practically.On the basis of data warehouse theory, this paper studies two fundamental methods to build a data warehouse, which are top-down view and down-top view, and it continues to study the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods, and the situations they are applicable to, then the paper puts forward a method to build data warehouse based on parallel databases. It discusses the theory of operational data store (ODS), and makes two improvements to it according to the data warehouse project of China Mobile Communications Corporation of HeiLongJiang. It discusses the design methods of data granularity and data partition, and their influences on the performances of data warehouse, and it continues to discuss the improvements to physical design of data warehouse.This paper also presents the designing and developing work of the data warehouse project of China Mobile Communications Corporation of HeiLongJiang, and it also introduces some functions of the system.
