The security of the information transmission has become more and more important with the development of modern communication technology. In recent years, chaos and chaos synchronization of semiconductor lasers (SLs) has attracted much attention for its potential applications in secure communications. The break-though of this technology will bring about revolutions on secure communications, especially on martial secure communications. However, at present, the deep physical insight into chaos and chaos synchronization of LDs are lacking. In this paper, chaos and chaos synchronization in semiconductor lasers (single mode and multi-mode) are studied theoretically and experimentally in detail. The main works of this dissertation are listed as follows:The chaotic dynamic characteristics of SLs subject to external light injection or optical feedback (including all-optical and optoelectronic feedback) have been simulated, and the theory model of multi-mode semiconductor lasers (MMSLs) are established also. Moreover, the chaotic features of MMSL's modes and the in-phase and anti-phase correlation properties among these modes have been analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, experimental investigations of chaotic dynamic characteristics of DFB laser subject to external light injection have been carried out.After considering mode coupling effect, the chaos synchronization of MMSLs are analyzed from the point of view of the total lasing output, and the synchronization between individual modes. As a result, message encoding, transmitting and decoding (analog signal and digital signal) via multimode synchronization is analyzed numerically.
