With the prosperity of the networks, not only can people obtain resources from the Internet, but also share their information as providers. Besides large-scaled multimedia providers, distributed small-scaled companies, organizations and indivisual content providers, may have the needs of digital rights management. This paper works on how to construct a practical, cheap and convenient information sharing system with DRM in a distributed and heterogeneous environment on the Internet. In this paper, we design and implement ThresPassport (Threshold scheme-based Passport), a web-based, distributed Single Sign-On (SSO) system which can be used in the authentication, log on and access control process in DRM system. It can help to simplify customer's experience in registering and signing on at varieties of web sites. ThresPassport utilizes a threshold-based secret sharing scheme to split a service provider's authentication key into partial shares distributed to authentication servers. Each authentication server generates a partial authentication token upon request by a legitimate user after proper authentication. Those partial authentication tokens are combined to compute an authentication token to sign the user on to a service provider. Compromise of single or less than threshold of the authentication servers reveals no credential information, nor influences the usability or security of the system. ThresPassport depends on neither Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) nor existence of a trustworthy authority. Those properties make it suitable for small companies, organizations and individual content providers. The system has significant importance in the aspect of both technology and economics. We also propose an interoperable DRM system based on Active License. The license in the system is different from the conditional passive license. It is a piece of excutable binary code which contains the modules of parting the rights language and decryption. Or alternatively, it calls the local components for those functions. The modules and components are provided by variaries of service providers for different application purposes. The components meet the standard interface so that content providers can choose or design and implement different components to construct their DRM system and in the mean time the users do not need to download and install different client modules for different DRM services. In the distributed and heterogeneous network, the computing power of the devices and network conditions varies a lot. In this paper, we present a DRM system for scalable multimedia that supports what you see is that you pay. In our system, multimedia is compressed with a fine granularity scalability codec and encrypted to preserve the fine scalable granularity and multiple access types and levels for each type offered by the scalable codec...
