The technology of Artificial Intelligence develops rapidly and becomes more and more humanized, emotional and expressional. The future artificial intelligence robots can coexist and communicate with human beings naturally, harmoniously and friendly. The study of the human-head portrait robot and the artificial emotion is related to many subjects such as robotics, human psychology, behavioral science and portrait arts, etc. And such study will further the enrichment and development of robotics, so the science significance of this thesis is far-reaching.The human-head portrait robot system H&F ROBOT-II with vision, facial expression recognition and representation functions was designed and developed. This system was composed with the human-head portrait robot H&F ROBOT-II body, the CCD image capture devices, the facial expression and organ control system, and the facial expression recognition software. The mechanism and driver of the eyeball, eyelid and jaw were redesigned and developed well which achieved the SCM control of the facial organ movements as well as saved the space.The thesis designed and programmed the facial expression recognition arithmetic program by using the method of basing-on-knowledge. The programming realized the inspection of the human face, the capturing and classification of facial expression features. In the test of the basic facial expressions of 5 groups of different people, 80% facial expressions are distinguished. The facial expression classifier is set up referred to the basic human facial expressions. It realized the function of facial expression classification through the combination of the variables of the facial expression features. The programmed facial expression classifier can recognize 6 kind of basic facial expressions: normal, happiness, anger, sadness, surprise and dislike. In this thesis, it also exploringly discussed the theoretic issue of the equal representation the human facial expressions by the human-head portrait robot.
