Many Western scholars regard the university library as the fundamental classroom, or even the heart of a university. With the continuously deepened reform in all aspects of the society and the consequent updating concepts and technology, the rhythm of life and work, as well as the complexity in dealing with people has been accelerated. Librarian, as souls of the libraries, are feeling "off balance" and they have been experiencing psychological problems. More and more people are suffering from psychological problems, feeling at a loss, depressive and worthless. The shortage of library personnels has been an obvious fact with more and more people thinking of quitting or changing their jobs. It is important to understand the psychological health conditions of librarians, analyse the contributing factors, and find out the strategic solutions, as these will help improve life quality and management efforts.PurposeThe purpose of the research is to find out the psychological health conditions of the librarians in Xi'an, and their adopted social support and coping style via questionaries; analyse the internal rules to the social support and coping style affected by sex, degrees of Academics and administrative qualifications. Hence it will provide accurate and reliable data for some organisations to stipulate management plans.Methods1. There are adoptions of the methods of Symptom Check-List (SCL-90), Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS) and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ) to the librarians from 15 universities selected by systematic sampling;2. There is an adoption of the method of SCL-90 to 135 teaching staff in universities as the control group selected by random sampling at the same time;3. A comparison will be held between the above two groups and the librarians will be regrouped by their sex, academic degrees, administrative qualifications, and a study will be held to analyse the relativeness between the results of the SCL-90 and social support as well as the coping styles.Results1.The librarians are in poor psychological health conditions ; 30.88% of librarians had different degrees of mental health problems, and mild degree, moderate degree and severe...
