Along with fiber-optic manufacturing growing up and use of fiber-optic spreading, fiber-optic network more increasingly applies to our life. Now the maintenance of fiber-optic network becomes very popular project. In the process of maintenance, measuring the transmission loss of fiber-optic is an important problem. This article introduces the cause of fiber-optic loss in fiber-optic transmission, and compares all kinds of measuring ways with each other. It also does some research into backscattering method, and does some research inmeasuring instrument-Optical Time Domain Reflectometer(OTDR). Throughdeeply researching into OTDR, I acquaints the measuring principle of backscattering method. The article brings forward two methods of improving measuring precision, basing on the different causes for measuring precision of backscattering method, One is increasing assistant frequency, and the other is using Golay complementary codes as input impulse. Subsequently the feasibility of two methods is validated through theoretical analysis, extrapolating formula and simulating in computer. At last, the article brings forward a new method of estimating fiber-opticbreakpoint-stimulated Brillouin scattering. It could measure the force frompoints in fiber optic link depending on its character, so it could find the breakpoints in the fiber-optic link in this way. The article brings forward the means to improve measuring precision of backscattering method, it is the guidance and reference for the research on fiber-optic transmission character and maintenance of fiber optic network.
