With the development of network technologies, the scale and complexity of networks has increased greatly. The network management demands not only the flexibility, convenience and effectiveness, but also the platform independence, self-organization, self-adaptability and cooperation. Traditional network management can no longer keep up with these trends, distributed network management in the mainstream. P2P (Peer to Peer) has defined a protocol specification for resource and services sharing in the network. It has high scalability, the ease of passing firewalls, and the ability to accomplish some tasks that cannot be done by some component models. Meanwhile, P2P provides a simple mechanism to process remote procedure call in a loose and distributed environment. The combination of P2P and network management technology has an excellent application prospect. In this paper, P2P technology is introduced into the field of network management, and a novel approach for network management is provided. At first, the problem of large-scale, heterogeneity and high-speed network and the deficiency of distributed network management model are analyzed, and then technology of distributed network management and P2P communication are described. Then a distributed network management model based on P2P for large-scale, dynamic network environment is proposed, a system framework of P2P Network Management System based on this architecture is be analyzed and designed. The problem of transparent and flexible remote communication between servers and workstations is solved. Finally, based on JXTA, we build a prototype system of distributed network management using the data encapsulation and the simple mechanism of communication between peers that JXTA provides. Our research improved on the theories of distributed network management and would be well grounded in the development of the P2P based distributed network management in the future.
