With the development of information science, identity authentication is used increasingly wilder in our life. The traditional recognition-based biometric authentication scheme, however, has some weak points, like the biometric template database, transmission of biometric template on the Internet.In this thesis, the author first briefly reviews the general biometric recognition technology and analyzes the weak points in a biometric recognition-based authentication system. Then, a technology of biometric-based key generation, called fuzzy extractor is introduced. The fuzzy extractor can extract random strings called biometric key and a public string from a biometric input. This public string can be used to recovery the Wometric key without storing the biometric template.In the following part, one weak point of the fuzzy extractor is pointed out and then improved. Then the biometric key from the improved fuzzy extractor is combined with traditional authentication machenism and new authentication schemes are designed and analyzed. Especially, the identity-based encryption scheme is introduced and the biometric key is combined with the identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme. By using this scheme, a new biometric authentication system is designed, which has several advantages over the traditional biometric-based authentication systems. These advantages are described explicitly in this thesis.Some experiments have been done to obtain the performance of the IBE scheme in the design.
