Along with the increasing development of optical network and communication techniques, integrated optical devices have been employed more and more widely by optical computing, optical information processing and optical fiber communications. In information optics and integrated optics, the transfer and control of light wave is particularly important. The research of optical waveguide theory is primitively focused on the area of the linear waveguides. With the rapid development of integrated degree and the prevalent using of the high optical power density, the nonlinear phenomenon appearing in the nonlinear waveguide attracts more and more attention. So it is quite necessary to study in the area of the nonlinear effect in waveguides.Nowadays, various nonlinear optical devices have been manufactured, not only for the features of small dimension, light, low loss, but also for the characteristics of strong nonlinear effects and fast response. Thus it is important to study and master the propagation characteristics of nonlinear optical waveguides for research, experimental measurement and manufacture of nonlinear integrated optics devices.Firstly, this thesis introduced nonlinear optical waveguide materials and the application of the nonlinear optical waveguide devices in optical communication. Then it gives a brief review and summary of electromagnetic theory of optical waveguides.Reviewing the published paper on the nonlinear waveguides, this thesis mainly researches the propagation characteristics of the nonlinear waveguide. By proposing an analytic method for calculating dispersion relations for nonlinear TE waves propagating in five-layer planar waveguide, it is presented the formulas for the field distribution and optical powers. A symmetry example is given and discussed in the thesis. The characteristics compensation of TEo with TE2 modes is analyzed.Finally, the characteristic of nonlinear TM waves propagating in five-layer nonlinear waveguide is analyzed elementarily. The approximate analytical solution is presented based on the characteristic of TM0, the dispersion relations is given.At present it is attracting more and more attention in nonlinear waveguide devices with different structures and different materials. We believe that there will be more and more theoretical and practical results on nonlinear waveguide devices in the future.
