The Study On Variant Forms Of Chinese Characters In Tang Yun

TangYun adds new annotations and characters on the basis of QieYun, in which we canget the knowledge of meaning and form of the characters. The remains of JiangFu edition ofTangYun is a dictionary of rhyming words and homophones, and it just left the incompletevolume of falling tone and entering tone, which contains large amount of variant heterographycharacters . The heterography characters are the characters that are formed for the same word,which have the same function to indicate the meaning of the word, or the different scripts ofthe same character. According to the definition of the heterography characters, we find out270 heterography characters through ChongWen (variant forms of character) analysis . Guidedby the theory of Chinese characters' formation, the dissertation classifies the heterographycharacters into the characters formed for the same word, or the words having the samefunction to express the word, and the different scripts of the same word .As for the characterswhich are formed for the same word, we analyze it through the direct component method.YiGouZi, characters formed for the same word, have different methods of composition, likethe method of pictographs, the method of associative compound and the method ofpictophonetic characters and so on. And the methods above mentioned distinguish from eachother. However, other YiGouZi, the different characters formed for the same word, are madeaccording to the same method of composition, like the method of associative compound or themethod of pictophonetic characters. As far as the pictophonetic characters with the differentXingFu, lateral radicals of sense, be concerned. For example, the different lateral radicals ofsense with the same function of expressing the word's meaning;and the different lateralradicals of sense, which indicating meaning from different angle, and the two kindsphenomenon will be analyzed in this dissertation. As for the YiTiZi, characters formed for thesame word, with different lateral radical of sound, they will be analyzed from thephonological aspect. And as for the different scripts of the same character, we divide it intothe reorganization of components of a Chinese character and the different scripts ofcomponents of a Chinese character. The components of Chinese character express its meaningthrough the inherited meaning of the component itself, and changes of arrangement of thecomponents of a Chinese character will not affect the meaning of the character. This kind ofchanges cause the occurrence of the reorganization of components of a Chinese character. Thetransition from XiaoZhuan, a kind of Chinese style of Calligraphy to official script;thetransition from cursive script to regular script, and the increase and decrease of the number ofstrokes, and the variation of intersection and connection of strokes can cause the occurrenceof the different scripts of components of a Chinese character, and as far as these be concerned,the norm can be find out from them. At the end of this dissertation, the list of heterography ofTangYun has been sorted out.The Study on Variant Forms of Chinese Characters in TangYun can provide referentinformation for the textual research about knotty Chinese characters, the compilation ofdictionary, the arrangement of the Chinese character, and the study on the history of Chinesecharacter.
