Virtual reality appeared at the end of the 1980s, which is a concern and hot to the scientific community in recent years. Its development is rapid and all software and hardware virtual facilities are endless. And virtual reality is not only a technology and an important means to computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). In the thesis study the use of virtual reality technology to the virtual highway aided design for the visualization of highway design presenting a viable solution.The visual highway design involved to many knowledge. In the thesis mainly study virtual road scene data management, the road linear assistance design, the scene render technology as well as the collision simulation technology. In the virtual scene highway design contains the very many spatial datum inevitably, both has the terrain features datum and the mass datum when the highway design had produced. In the thesis study one highly effective way in view of these datum characteristics based on the viewpoint management way. At the same time the visualization can have the very high request inevitably to the graph processing technology, not only can correctly display road scene, moreover must achieve the lifelike reappearance, sometimes even is the request of real-time render, in order to satisfy the demand of these applications, the real-time render technology based on the graphics processor become a direction of this thesis research, all graphical display technology which in this thesis studied is real-time render technology based on the graphics processor. In a virtual three dimensional scene physical simulation which simulates the real world is essential part, and collision detection is this kind of simulation core. This thesis has studied one kind of reliably technology which is to seek the point of intersection of spatial line segment. It provide the physical simulation for the three dimensional road scene. Below is the brief introduction of every chapter:Chapter 1, introducing the importance of VR technology, the foundation, the research purpose and the significance of the project. The key technology used in the thesis is introduced.Chapter 2, introducing the core technology in this thesis, including graphichardware, vector math, Direct3D9 and OpenGL API, light models and render methods. At last introducing physics emulation technology.Chapter 3, introducing the professional road design technology including plane design, vertical section design and transect design.Chapter 4, presenting the implementation details of the system. This chapter introduces the system architecture of VR&R engine. Details of highway design ways in the VR scene such as contour line arithmetic, highway plane , highway vertical section , highway transect and highway combination design. Details of graphic render and collision detection technology.Chapter 5, concludes the system, points out insufficiencies and innovation, and predicts the prospect of various technologies in this thesis.
