At present, the technology on Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) is a very popular issue in the field of wireless communications. It is developed from smart antenna, and its feature is that multiple antennas are adopted both at the ends of transmiter and receiver in order to resolve the problem for the lack of frequency spectrum day by day. In this dissertation, the resource management for MIMO system is researched. Firstly, the basic theories of MIMO, such as system model and system capacity, are introduced; secondly, the problems for power allocation and adaptive modulation which is a part of MIMO resource management are discussed emphatically; finally, an optimal power allocation and adaptive modulation algorithm for MIMO system over time-varying fading channel based on average transmit power constraint and water-filling theory with restrict condition is proposed. By using computer simulation, the performances in the aspects of spectral efficiency, power-using rate and selection of modulation mode are analyzed. Compared with some other similar algorithms, higher selection of modulation, better spectral efficiency and power-using rate can be achieved by using this algorithm. This algorithm is not only easy to implement and high in efficiency, but also restricts the process of power allocation so that besides eliminating the co-channel interference, the request for the linear range of power amplifier at the transmitter also can be reduced. Therefore, by using this algorithm, the feasibility is greatly increased.
