In the third-generation wireless communication systems high data rates need to be reliably transmitted over fading channels. Traditional techniques hardly satisfy these demands. Recently, being a method to alleviate the detrimental effects of wireless fading channels, transmit diversity has been studied extensively. Space-time coding is an attractive approach to transmit diversity in which multiple antennas can be deployed at both transmitter and receiver.Space-time coding is a new transmit diversity technique. A system with multiple antennas at the transmitter and multiple antennas at the receiver improve channel capacity consumedly and bring coding gain and diversity gain. At the same time the bandwidth efficiency is higher than the traditional single antenna system.Space-time coding can be divided into layered space-time coding, space-time trellis coding (STTC) and space-time block coding (STBC). STTC is a good coding for the MIMO system but the decoding algorithm complexity. When the number of transmit antennas is fixed, the decoding complexity of space-time trellis coding (measured by the number of trellis states in the decoder) increases exponentially as a function. In this paper, we mainly study the space-time block coding in many aspects, such as space-time model, diversity, channel model, modulation, space-time block coding, the moment generating function (MGF) and the error symbol rate performance in different modulation and different fading channel by the methods of Monte Carlo simulation and the moment generating function (MGF).Based on the principle of STBC, a space-time coding simulating platform by MATLAB is proposed. The user can achieve the SER (Symbol Error Rate) performance in all kinds of conditions. It not only can comprehend the space-time coding deeper, but also can help to choose the optimization scheme in different conditions.
