The information hiding which is newly arisen across lots of fields, has broken the traditional cryptographic ideas. It is a new point of view to survey the information security and is a new direction in that realm. The information hiding techniques will raise the important function in secret communication especially the information security on the networks. Combined with HVS(Human Visual System), we can put secret message in the image without degrading the quality for its redundancy and to secure the information. The message to be transferred can be image or text file, and can be hided in the space domain or frequency domain of the image. At present time, most of the studies focus on digital watermarking techniques, and few are done on steganography, one of the most important directions in the field of information hiding. This thesis concerns the steganography. We also place emphasis on its applications in digital images. In contrast with encryption, the existence of communication process and both communication sides is hided in the steganography. In this paper, firstly, the basic knowledge about information hiding is presented, and then the techniques of digital images based information hiding in the domain of space and domain of frequency. The respective advantages and disadvantages are presented. Base on the analysis of security of embedding data in image, a scheme for secret communication is designed. The scheme'security is strong, and it can be used for martial secret communication and e-commerce etc.
