On the base of analyzing the theory of Vegetation Index and characteristics of vegetation's reflection spectrum, then contrast the main Vegetation Indexes using in monitoring vegetation, especially the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI). Further more, considering the characteristics of data received from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer(MODIS), study the rule of the MODIS data of the red (0.6-0.7μm) and NIR wavelengths (0.7-1.1μm) through the experience of choosing the MODIS data of large-scaled forests around the Miyun reservoir, and the large-scaled wheat in ShunYi county, and the westward hungriness of Qinghai province, and the evergreen broadleaved forests in Hainan province. After all, concluding the model of NDVI based on MODIS(MODIS-NDVI). After that, contrast the AVHRR-NDVI and the MODIS-NDVI through the experience on Hubei'ShengLongJia County with different phases MODIS data and AVHRR data without cloud. In the sequent part, achieve the process to gain MODIS-NDVI from HDF after pretreatment. Afterwards, make use of the whole year MODIS-NDVI data of 2004 of Leimeng grassland, Hainan evergreen broad-leaved forests and Qinghai's west hungriness, test the ability of the model of NDVI based on MODIS in monitoring vegetation. The result shows that the MODIS-NDVI can reflect the differences of variety of vegetation and the changes of growth of the same vegetation. At the last part, achieve the MODIS-NDVI to monitor the growth of bulrush of DongTing Lake, and infer the growing range of bulrush. The result indicates that the changes of the MODIS-NDVI accord with the changes of bulrush in the whole year, it proves that using the MODIS-NDVI to monitoring the bulrush of DongTing Lake is possible. And further more, calculate the area of bulrush based on the changes of time-serials MODIS-NDVI. The numerical value is close to realistic value.
