Nowadays, the increasing number of information resource caused by the soaring information types and quantity is a great opportunity for people to find useful information. However, in face of the disorder and changeability of the Web information spaces, people get lost in the ocean of information. In order to seek proper information, people rise to the challenge by introducing effective intelligent navigation ideas and methods into the information spaces.Most of the data in the Web information spaces are non-structural or semi-structural, which results in the lack of semantics. The bottleneck of the research of intelligent navigation is just how to understand the content of information. So, people need to lay a way for the knowledge representation that can be understood and reasoned by the computer. The Semantic Web promises fine outlet for intelligent navigation.This paper firstly studies the basic theory of Semantic Web. Secondly, it introduces the new methods of Semantic Web-based information organization. Then it discusses the generic structure and running mechanism of Semantic Web-based intelligent navigation. Finally, it explores some successful examples in foreign navigation research.The dissertation is divided into 4 parts:Part 1 introduces the fundamentals of Semantic Web, including its basic knowledge such as definitions, hierarchy, application areas, and its practice knowledge such as Semantic Web languages and tools.Part 2 studies the Semantic Web-based information organization technology such as semantic classification, semantic indexing, and semantic integration.Part 3 proposes the Semantic Web-based intelligent navigation model. It first introduces a generic structure of the system, and then analyzes the function of every module in the system. Furthermore, it discusses the component of semantic model of the user, semantic content-based personalized navigation way and semantic structure-based browsing navigation way.Part 4 anatomizes several Semantic Web-based intelligent navigation systems in the foreign navigation research. By specifying these systems' structures, features, functions, it gives a picture of Semantic Web-based intelligent navigation in practice.The dissertation is one of the products of "a study on information architecture-based navigation mechanism" supported by the funding of Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China (Project ID: 03JB870002) .
