With the rapid advancement of the computing and Internet technology, the amount of various multimedia data including digital images increases in a surprising speed. Due to the nature for those data, it is very difficult for people to search for relevant information over the Internet. While people benefit a lot from the advent of information digitized technology, they also have to face the challenge about how to analyze, store and retrieve the huge amount of data efficiently and effectively, especially for the image and video data.This dissertation is dedicated to the study on the key techniques of content-based image retrieval. We first give an introduction to the state of the art of content-based image retrieval technology. We review the analysis and representation of image content, some common techniques for content based image retrieval, and other related issues. Based on the extraction of color features for an image, the image content representation is based on Color Quantity and the extraction method of DCD information. After the extraction of color features, we implement an effective color retrieval approach, which can use representation of colors to present the whole region of interest.As for the similarity measures and relevance feedback technology in retrieval, in the dissertation, the similarity measures are based on XM algorithm, and study the improved EMD and MPHSM algorithm further. The study of relevance feedback is based on the color feature. We give a blue print of relevance feedback which based on merged palette histogram.Furthermore, we discuss a new application of CBIR which combine the MPEG-7 with digital watermarking.
