With the rapid development of society and economy, plus the incredible explosion of population, modern traffic has become one of challenges that hold back the further development. The study upon Intelligent Transportation System, also known as ITS, becomes the signpost for modern traffic management and controlling system.At the beginning, the background of intelligent transportation system has been briefly introduced. Then the features of traffic images shot by camera have been analyzed. The frame difference between moving vehicles in the traffic images has been studied particularly. The mathematical morphological filtering technique has been selected because of its excellent filtering effect. And then in the course of filtering, the suitable value has been put into place achieved by a great deal of study and comparison. Both eight-neighbor factors and close-opening operation have been chosen from several options in the course of filtering algorithm, In the end, the experiments and corresponding analyses of moving vehicle detection and filtering have been conducted by means of program execution.1. Aiming at traffic images shot on the spot, given the characteristics of vehicle video images, the detection method realized by the frame difference that is not vulnerable to all sorts of disturbances from natural environment, such as illumination has been chosen. The mathematical morphological filtering technique based upon frame difference method has been push forward and the basic program flow chart for this algorithm is also set forth.2. The programs for both the moving vehicle detection and mathematical morphological filtering have been written on the development platform of Visual C++. The results have shown that the algorithm in this thesis is effective and of good applicable value after plenty of experiments and analyses.
