Wireless sensor network (WSN) has intensive potential on military and other fields for its unique advantages. More attention has been paid to WSN and the research on each aspect of WSN is also a active field in current academe. Routing protocol is a key issue on network layer in WSN. This thesis puts more emphasis on designing and realizing a query-based reliable routing protocol(QBRRP), which considers the link quality of routing path, and aims to monitor the area where the WSN covers.Based on the study of a lot of related literatures, first of all in this thesis, the research status of WSN, the characteristics and application area of WSN, the communication protocol architecture, and the classify of routing protocol for application are summarized. After the declaration of QBRRP's packet type, QBRRP is designed in detail according to the different function of the sink node and the source node. The core of QBRRP protocol is the choice of link estimator, the technique of combining the hop and expected transmission number metric(ETX) as the basis of fixing routing path, and the design of mutual layer network architecture. The simulation results show that the exponentially weighted moving average(EWMA) estimator is better than moving average(MA) estimator. The EWMA estimator effectively reduces the total ETX of WSN, increases the throughput of network, also makes the network more energy-efficient and reliable. Using the method of combining hop count and ETX can avoid routing cycle and build up the network topology quickly. At last, the real-world experiment is completed on the WSN test-bed. The experiment results show that QBRRP protocol can complete the query task of the WSN monitoring area, efficiently obtain message of source nodes. Even when some nodes in old path are lost, QBRRP protocol can automatically change the routing path, therefore, this also QBRRP protocol is stable and reliable.
