With the development of the modern technologies, such as computer science, graphics management and image generation science, stereo video and audio science, information synthesis science, display technology etc, the visual simulation based on the virtual reality technology comes into the world. Based on the research status of the virtual reality, the author built the virtual visual simulation system of the Engine Room by Creator which is an 3D modeling tool. This virtual Engine Room contains the Engine Room structure, the main engine, assistant engine, the pipes etc. The visual simulation system accomplished the functions of the virtual roaming and collision detection by use of the software Vega. The main research work includes some aspects as follows:1. Study the status of the development and application of the VR technology existing. Combined with the author's research, the purpose and significance of research work and the main work are also pointed out.2. The visual simulation system on marine engine room is totally designed, and the function modules are also implemented such as roaming mode, audio controlling, environment effect etc.3. On the basis of learning the real time simulation software Creator, the models are established including the virtual engine room, main engine, generator, oil separator, boiler and so on. And some display optimization technologies are analyzed while modeling, such as visibility determinant, level of detail, texture mapping and instance.4. The manual roaming is implemented by using the real time simulation software Vega, which can control of Isectors and observers. In this thesis, the flowchart of the visual driven program is also presented. And the author accomplished the combination of the OpenGL and Vega, and analyzed the problem of scenes switched in Vega.5. The collision detection is the emphasis in this paper. The mathematic method of the collision detection and how to accomplish collision detection using the method of BUMP in Vega are presented in this part. In order to avoiding the unreality phenomenon of walking through the wall, the result of the collision detection is analyzed. And the action up stairs is implemented by collision detection.
