At present no-one search engine has been able to cover all WWW resources, moreover the majority of search engines can commonly index only about 5%-20% of the entire WWW resources. Because each search engine used the different index technology and the information collection technology, enabled respective collected information resources to have the quite big difference in the very great degree. The practice indicates, regarding user's identical query, different search engine can return the difference results. If uses only one search engine, is not possible to obtain all resources which originally may obtain. Moreover, nearly each search engine has different format in the query grammar. Such in order to use these search engines, user can not but go the familiar each search engine's grammar.As a result of traditional search engine's insufficiency in these aspects, but meta search engine can resolve these problems , therefore this thesis focused on the research of meta search engine. This paper demnonstrates the architecture and essential technology of meta search engine based on agent.At first, presents the trend of development of search engine and the basic concept of meta search engine.Moreover, presents agent technology and multiagent system and the characteristic, classification and interaction of multiagent cooperation system. Finally, put forward an architecture of meta search engine based on agent, and dwell on all parts and principle of the system.Designs and implements a prototype system of meta search engine based on multiagent cooperation system.This system structure mainly contains pre-processing layer of information retrieval, information retrieval agent layer and post-processing layer of information retrieval. Analyze the retrieval syntax of each search engine in detail,extract the common format from the most search engines,define the syntax in XML. The search engine agents parallelly interact with corresponding search engines in order to decrease the response time of Qeway.Describe how to merge the query results of the current search system,put forwards an multistrategy results merging algorithm in order to improve the system precision.
