The active modulation of light is an important subject in the present integratedoptics field. The dielectric waveguide covered by metal cladding, can efficientlycouple the incident beam into waveguide layer. Furthermore, when the waveguidelayer is filled in anisotropic dielectric, the waveguiding behavior of device can beadjusted due to the change of permittivity tensor in the waveguide layer, which can beachieved by forcing an external voltage in the metal cladding. Therefore, themodulation of light can be finished by changing the external voltage. The researchwork within this thesis is focus on the metal-cladding uniaxial crystal planarwaveguide and investigated numerically the effect of geometrical parameters andpermittivity tensor on the waveguide behavior through transfer matrix method andFinite-difference frequency-domain(FDFD) method.The main research works and conclusions are as following:1,The 4x4 transfer matrix is derived analytically by virtue of Maxwell equation andconstitutive relation, which provides the theoretical foundation for the device.2,The mode field distribution in the the metal-cladding uniaxial crystal planarwaveguide structure is investigated by FDFD, which gives the evidence for the hybridwaveguide mode behavior.3,The effects of the thickness of metal cladding and the direction of optical axison the reflectivity and phase difference is numerically investigated by transfer matrixmethod. We acquired the design value of the metal-cladding uniaxial crystal planarwaveguide structure use as a circular polarization converting device.4,The Goos-H(a|¨)nchen shift in the metal-cladding uniaxial crystal planar waveguidestructure is numerically investigated by stationary-phase method, which is afoundation of using it to realizing the function of light modulation, photoswitch andso on.
