Power Management Micro Controller (PMMC) IC is widely used in all kinds of portable electrical instruments and consumer electronic equipments. Battery charge controller devices can help to extend battery life, thereby enabling users to use their devices for longer periods between charging. Currently, the manufacturers from USA, Japan and Europe are all increasing their production capacity of power management IC. They also increase their research cost for developing higher performance power management IC. This paper focus on the research and development of high performance lithium battery charger, as well as the realization of test.Li-Ion or Li-Polymer batteries need high accuracy charge current and output voltage for extending its charge cycle life and improving performance. For this, Freescale Semiconductor provides the series battery charger ICs with the highest performance, accuracy and prominent agility configuration in semiconductor environment. This paper based on a comprehensive introduction of the current power management IC's basic structure and principle. Meanwhile, this paper focuses on describing the core modules'technology and function. This power management IC's core modules comprehensive test was done by Freescale own test program and method on auto test equipment, such as regulator module, battery charger module, over voltage and temperature protection module, LED driver module. In order to improve the performance of Freescale's Li-ion battery charger ICs for different customers, the charge current can be configured for different requirements. The high accuracy charge current and output voltage test was implemented in electrical test.
