With the technology development and changes in market demand, future wireless communication networks will be the wireless converged network in which multiple access technologies coexist and work jointly, and broadband, ubiquitous and heterogeneous interconnect technology will become the main theme of broadband wireless communications. As a new broadband wireless network, WMNs have the characteristics of self-organization, multi-hop communications and integration of heterogeneous networks, and it is a strong candidate of achieving ubiquitous, incorporate broadband wireless communi- cation. On the other hand, multimedia data communication in the proportion of the total volume of communication services increases rapidly, which puts forward higher QoS requirements of the wireless network. Therefore, meeting the QoS requirement of different types of multimedia apllications is critical to the success of WMNs, and WMNs resource allocation and QoS optimization have become one of the current research focuses. The paper discusses WMNs resource allocation and QoS optimization mechanism based on the cross-layer design. Firstly, the paper points out the necessary and process of resource allocation and QoS optimization research. Secondly, the technologies of resource allocation and QoS optimization are studied, and the existing typical algorithms of them are introduced as well as their strengths and weaknesses are analyzed. On the basis of the study above, this paper proposes a resource allocation and QoS optimization framework, including a multiple channel WMNs QoS routing metric, an enhanced channel allocation algorithm and game theory based power control algorithm. Finally, we explore the application of the proposed framework in VoIP transmission, and we conduct multi-angle experiments and performance evaluation in simulation platform NS2.
