Precise target detection and identification are of great significance to the identification of friend or foe, determination of battlefield situation and decision-making as well as command. With the rapid development in military technology, target acquisition and anti-recognition techniques are all advanced. In Iraq war, the mistakenly hit between the U.S. and British tanks indicates that, more effective target precise identification techniques are in need. As a result of modern disguise technology, traditional reconnaissance and detection technology are difficult to fully meet the need of reconnaissance.Motions of target are difficult to control. Target recognition based on micro-Doppler features can extract motion signatures of target from the radar returns, which opens up a probe to new ways of target recognition. At present, identification of targets on the ground can only recognize pedestrians, wheeled vehicles and tracked vehicles generally; no feature information used to further determine identity such as target type can be given. No literature studies making use of micro-Doppler features to identify the type and identification of a target. This paper deals with micro-Doppler features of tracked vehicles, parameter estimation and precise identification, based on micro-Doppler induced by micro-motion of load and chassis of tracked vehicles with different structure. Micro-motion and micro-Doppler features of three structural different tracked vehicles are studied systematically, the Doppler frequency expressions are deduced, and the Doppler time-frequency spectrum are presented. The micro-Doppler features of tanks are extracted with the help of high resolution time-frequency analysis. The theoretical and time-frequency analysis obtained micro-Doppler spectrums are simulated. Target parameters of tanks are estimated based on the extracted micro-Doppler features, and the general method of prescise identification is given.Simulation results verified the correctness, feasibility and validity. New method and technique are developed for classification and precise identification of tracked vehicles.
