Antenna array systems are widely recognized as an enabling technology for addressing the demand of wireless network capacity and ensure a wide range of coverage solutions when employed in place of traditional fixed-coverage sector antennas. Particularly, switched-beam antenna systems are believed to offer a robust implementation against multipath propagation effects and reduced complexity that is inherent with fully adaptive implementations which offer relatively higher degree of flexibility to changing coverage environment. This document describes a comparative analysis between switched beam and adaptive array beamforming to provide a required coverage, increase capacity, guarantee optimal throughput and a level of quality of services. The simulation results analyze the effect of practical antenna array patterns and the impact of beamforming and beam switching on coverage planning and performance right at the design and implementation stage. The results show that it's possible to overcome most challenging coverage issues and optimize the array intelligence in a bid to extend the range and coverage in a controlled overlap, grating effect and holes cover-up, increase capacity and reduce downlink interference by analyzing the relative applicable number of antenna elements, their physical configuration, spacing and phase shifting.
