Optical parametric amplification (OPA) is a new technology for optical amplifier based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in parametric process, which is used to amplify the weak signals in optical transmission. Since OP A could be used to amplify signals which are of any wavelengths, and it applies high gain, wide & flat broadband, and low noise, and it also can amplify multiple signals simultaneously, it becomes a research hotspot in recent years and has broad prospects in the future. In recent years, research on parametric amplification focused on improving the gain, bandwidth and achieving lower noise & polarization sensitivity and so on. This paper starts from the vector four-wave mixing coupled mode equations, studies on the relationship between the parameters of pumps & fiber and the parametric amplification gain, bandwidth and so on, and analyzes the theory of polarization and schemes for obtaining polarization insensitive gain. Main work of the paper focuses on:Firstly, the development of optical communication and the background of optical parametric amplification are reviewed in the paper. Secondly the applications of optical amplifier in optical fiber communication system are summurized, the advantages and limitations of optical parametric amplification are outlined. And then the current situation at home and abroad is analyzed. Then, the theory of four-wave mixing and phase matching techniques in parametric process is researched in detail. Based on the principle of parametric amplification of single pump and dual pumps, the effects of the parameters of pumps and fiber on parametric gain, bandwidth and so on are analyzed. Finally, polarization theory in parametric amplification is researched in detail, and the schemes for obtaining polarization insensitive gain in FOPA with different pump structures are proposed, and different schemes are compared with each other on the performances. Based on the theoretical analysis, simulation systems are designed, the results are analyzed, and the performances of the system are researched.
