The routing protocol for Cognitive Wireless Mesh Networks is one of the focus problems of current researches, it has important research value. This article is supported by the major national science and technology projects. It aims at understanding the characteristics of the Cognitive Wireless Mesh Networks and designing new routing algorithms with better performance. This article analyzes the functions which the routing protocol should improve in Cognitive Wireless Mesh Network and presents a new type of routing protocol named AODV-COG which is based on and modified from the AODV protocol. It has two main innovations:First, in the path selection process, it puts the improvement of the overall throughput of network on important position. It combines the bidirectional transmission success rate of channels and min-hops routing metric to form a new route selection criteria named MIN-ETX. Second, by adopting the cross-layer design idea, the network layer understands the spectrum usage information of the cognitive users through the information provided by the lower layer and distributes reasonable channel to each hop, which makes use of spectrum holes efficiently.Theoretical analysis and performance simulation results show that the new mixed MIN-ETX routing metric used in AODV-COG can overcome the oneness of min-hop metric and improve the overall throughput of the network; the real-time channel adjustment strategy can periodically adjust the spectrum used by each hop to adapt to spectrum changes timely. This article is organized as follows:this paper study Cognitive Wireless Mesh Network's topology features and the key technologies firstly. Then it analyzes the routing protocol's current development and main problem which the routing protocols need to address. Finally, analysis of the problems that the traditional routing protocols exposed in Cognitive Wireless Mesh environment is presented. Based on this analysis, a new routing protocol which can improve the throughput performance and efficiently use the spectrum holes is proposed. In addition, the simulation work testifies the performance of the new proposed routing protocol.
