There are a lot of researches of museums since it came into being over a hundred years ago, most of which are concerned about one aspect of it, instead of the overall development of museums in China. Using the methods of comparative analysis and comprehensive index, this paper takes the statistical data of museums as a starting point, from the perspective of the aggregates, the government input indicators, the level of development indicators, the market-oriented indicators, and the indicators of contribution to national economy. It provides a new way of studying the museums by discussing the overall and regional development of Chinese museums. This paper also discusses the problems of Chinese museums and gives some suggestions for both the government and the museums.By analyzing the data, the author find there are some problems of the Chinese museums, such as insufficient funds, lack of personnel, conservative institution, poor management. To solve these problems, both of the government and museums need to make efforts. On one hand, the government should relax regulations to achieve "three changes", which are the shift from control to management, the shift from ubsidies to investment, and the shift from government protection to social security, and promote the cooperation between regional museums. On the other hand, the museum should reform the management system and personnel management system, establish diversified revenue model, accept multi-party monitoring, so as to change the bureaucracy, improve its level of public cultural services, establish a good public image and develop themselves.Since the data in the Statistical Yearbook is not including the number of non-heritage system, but only of heritage system, the statistical data in this paper is actually reduced. However, most of them are heritage museums, so the data can reflect the overall trend of museums and speed.
