ABSTRACT: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can obtain high resolution image, it is a microwave remote sensing technology which has the characteristics of all-weather, all-day-long. In practical applications, SAR is always be used to position buildings, airports and other key military targets, and these military targets are usually has the strong scattering characteristics. Detecting strong scatter regions to accurately find the military targets, possessing of important military values. Thus seeking for effective method of positioning SAR strong and weak scattering regions is the objectives of the study in this paper.In this paper, through analyzing the principle of SAR imagery and the character of the strong scattering target area, use double cross template to extract image strong scatter center, then employ three methods such as template calculation method, scanning positioning method and the grid method to extract strong scatter areas. Through MATLAB simulation experiments verify the effectiveness of the algorithm and obtain better results, which can satisfy the requirements of segmenting strong and weak scattering areas of SAR image. The main duties are as follows:1) This article summarizes the research significance and the situations at home and abroad of SAR features extraction, and studies the SAR imaging principle and characteristic, described the theory basis for seeking strong scatter regions extraction algorithm.2) Extract the strong scattering center of the SAR images. According to the existing method of points detection and target feature extraction, proposed an algorithm of cross template, which can Pinpoint the center of the cross tail.3) Aim the strong scattering center which we have extracted, proposed three extraction method of strong scatter regions:template calculation method, scanning positioning method, and the grid method. Combining morphological algorithms, achieving segment strong and weak scattering areas in the SAR image.
