As an excellent and easily experimentally realizable example of coupled nonlinear oscillators, mutually coupled semiconductor lasers system (MCSLs) have attracted much attention because of their wide applications in varies aspects such as achieving high output power in lasers array, optical memories and chaos secret communication. Previous relevant studies on MCSLs mostly focus on particular nonlinear dynamics states for the system parameters varying only within a small range, but the integrated dynamic characteristics for varying the frequency detuning or coupling strength within a large range has not been reported. In this paper, a delayed mutually coupled system consisting of two semiconductor lasers has been constructed, the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of MCSLs are experimentally investigated by varying the relative coupling level and the frequency detuningΔf (Δf=f1-f2, where f1, f2 are the free frequencies of semiconductor lasers 1 and semiconductor lasers 2 respectively) within a relatively wide range; diverse dynamic states have been observed such as table injection locking, periodic one oscillations, periodic two oscillations, periodic three oscillations, periodic four oscillations, multi-period oscillations, quasi-period and chaos oscillations, and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics are mapped as a function of the relative coupling level and the frequency detuning between the two lasers. The results show that the two lasers have the same output; abundant dynamical states are exhibited in the region of low relative coupling level andΔf approximate half of the relaxation oscillation. In addition, based on the theoretical model of the MCSLs, the synchronization performances of the system have studied in theoretically. The results show that the cross correlation function is symmetrical distributed and have the approximately equal peak value, this indicate that system can appear lagging synchronization and leading synchronization randomly.
