Digital image processing technology has been widely used in the aerospace,biomedical engineering,industrial detection,robot vision and many other fields. Currently, the numerous small and medium-sized enterprises have great demand to analysis and measurement devices which are easily used and with low cost. This paper do some research on coal petrography analysis and volume measurement by using digital image processing technology, for providing the core algorithm for the measurement and analysis equipment.With preprocessing to vitrinite image firstly, a new method of removing padding is proposed, which is named Histogram Threshold Bimodal Method. This method can achieve the effective segmentation by using the characteristics of different gray levels between the vitrinite and padding, and the image quality can meet the requirement, which also has low complexity and easily implementation. At the same time, we compare three methods of removing impurity through the experiment. The results show that the passivation filtering has the best denoise effect, the image SNR raise from 3.20dB to 10.17dB, and the image resolution can meet the ideal requirements much better. On the basis of image preprocessing, the paper then implements the vitrinite identification and quantitative statistics. Aim to solve the dimension disasters problems brought by the traditional PCA, we proposes an improved PCA algorithm. Experiments show that the method can reduce the complexity of data processing, and have the higher recognition speed, the image SNR raise from 4.53dB to 12.17dB, and the recognition rate also has greatly improved. Paper also simulates the quantitative statistics algorithm in MATLAB, and the count results can meet the actual situation. According to vitrinite reflectance determination situation, by the effectively way of combining image processing technology with mathematics, paper establish the mathematical relationship between the reflectance and brightness. Experimental results show that the reflectance calculation results obtained by this method have good linear correlation with the data obtained by microscope photometer.This paper proposes an effective method to measure the coal volume by using image processing technology:firstly, get the two-dimensional images by using left and right cameras from different angles, and then create the three-dimensional model, coal size is thus obtained. Simulation results show that this method has small error and high precision. In the part of the camera calibration, this paper proposes a dual-camera parameter calibration method based on plane template. This method fully uses the powerful features of function library in the MATLAB calibration toolbox, and the operation is very easy and the precision is also satisfactory. Overall, paper provides an effective and feasible solution for the small and medium-sized enterprises to make coal petrography analysis and measurement instrument volume by using image processing technology. Further optimization and improvement the solution, it can be applied to practice, reduce the investment cost effectively which have good promotional value.
