The adaptive beamforming algorithm is the core of the smart antenna technology. The available transcational algorithms have their disadvantages of high computation complexity and slow convergence rate. As a highly efficient parallel global optimization search method, Genetic Algorithm (GA) can solve such problems. The emphasis of this paper is researching a GA suitable to beamforming technology.Based on the study of the beamforming algorithm, GA is introduced to the beamforming technology, and three areas are improved according to the characteristics of beamforming: First, the complex-coded GA is adopted in order to make the algorithm more accurate and efficient. Second, an improved adaptive genetic algorithm with the time of evolution is proposed to maintain species diversity and improve the convergence performance. Finally, a new combined GA is proposed. This algorithm not only maintains good global searching performance, but also prompts the ability of local searching by introducing the gradient information. Computer simulation results show that the combined-GA-based beamforming algorithm exhibits high anti-jamming ability and fast convergence rate.The combined-GA-based beamforming algorithm proposed in this paper is applied to the signal preprocessing system. The system model is built, as well as the algorithms of the data transmission and detection are developed. Simulation on the TD-SCDMA proves that the combined-GA-based beamforming algorithm has a better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of system than the traditional algorithms.
