With the rapid development of communication and computer technology, especially the explosion of multimedia traffic, the data traffic in Internet has increased sharply. With the rapid provisioning of higher performance links and the introduction of wavelength division multiplex (WDM), the bottleneck has moved from the links to the routers. Switching Fabric, a kernel component in the router architecture, has a direct effect on the performance of the router. The major role of scheduling algorithm for switching fabrics is to match the input ports to output ports, and resolve the resource contentions in the switch fabrics. Therefore scheduling algorithm has great influences on the performance of the switch fabrics.In this dissertation, we made our research on scheduling algorithm for large capacity switching fabrics. Two major achievements are outlined as follows. Scheduling algorithm for Crossbar switching fabric is studied. First a profound comparison of several existing scheduling algorithms for Crossbar fabric has been made. Then a summary of the merits and defects of existing scheduling algorithms has also been made. On the basis of the summary, we propose a new fully desynchronized scheduling algorithm with multiple iterations, called CFFAC(Complete Fanout First based on Address copy). This scheduling algorithm is divided into two parts: the complete fanout and the part of fanout. In each time slot, it send the cell of complete fanout firstly, it enter the stage of part fanout secondly if it can not complete fanout the cell. Simulation results show CFFAC algorithm has better performance under various traffic models.
