With the development of network and communication technologies, performance and functionalities of internet router is set a higher request. The routing architecture based on ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) fulfills the open and programmable demands of the next generation networks. It is one trend of next generation routers. In this thesis, Petri Net is used to research the ForCES protocol model and predict the performance, of ForCES middleware. Firstly, on the basis of reviewing Petri Net, we build the various models of ForCES protocol, such as:the connection construct model, the transaction mechanism model and the heartbeat mechanism model. On this basis, these models are verified for functional correctness. Meanwhile, we analyze the correlative performance of ForCES protocol according to the empirical assumption of the arrival rate in Petri Net. Secondly, we design the overall framework of object-oriented ForCES middleware and build the models on Petri Net, such as:the model of ForCES Protocol Layer (PL), the model of ForCES Transport Mapping Layer (TML) and the model of ForCES protocol encapsulation. Finally, predict the performance of ForCES middleware on the models and put forward improving the method. The main work of this thesis has provided the performance reference for ForCES router development, and also has directive signification to improve the performance of ForCES middleware.
